Norbert Evenich's World http://evenorbert.posterous.com i just like to write.... posterous.com Sun, 05 Jun 2011 01:39:00 -0700 Why I don't upgrade to the newest Linux distro anymore? http://evenorbert.posterous.com/why-i-dont-upgrade-to-the-newest-linux-distro http://evenorbert.posterous.com/why-i-dont-upgrade-to-the-newest-linux-distro

I have been using Linux since the fall of 2006, but this is the first time I will not upgrade my current Linux distribution, which is Fedora 14. Not just because I have technical difficulties: my DVD writer can't read anything and I don't have the money to buy a new one and I have problems with my harddrive too, so much that I've already made a backup of my most important stuff through my mother's machine.

The biggest reason for me is to NOT upgrade to Fedora 15 is that I just simple got tired of the process. Every half year upgrading just to get the newest software, is the biggest marketing move in the world of Linux. I know, I should just use rolling distros like Arch, but I don't want to mess with my system every day. Let's look at from a practical point of view. We live in the web browser. I'm a (mostly) happy WordPress modifier (can't program, but I love modifing stuff) and I'm interested in the social aspects of the web. I use Firefox for web browsing (Chrome for testing, but not much), Clementine for listening to music, Gimp and Inkscape for graphics, etc. I update KDE through the KDE for Red Hat repository and I install every security update. I just simply have no reason to update. I will only install a new version if my current distro is not supported, which if I am remembering correctly still a year away.

Think about it when a new, "shiny" version comes out: is it worth upgrading?

Teetotalism (or tee-totalism) is a path to not to drink alcohol or who advocates this practice. A person who prefers this practice is called teetotaler. Teetotalism was started in preston, England in the early 19th century. (from Wikipedia)

I have to say I'm not a complete teetotaler. While I'm against drinking alcohol due to health reasons, I usually drink wine or champagne to celebrate birthdays, the New Year or Christmas. Red wine can be also healthy if you drink a small amount per day.

A mocktail is a cocktail without alcohol.

Really, they should make a cooking show together on the internet (TV is so 20th century...) I have never cooked anything but I'm sure that I'm a better cook than Conan.

Sun, 10 Apr 2011 22:48:00 -0700 Nostalgic music evening http://evenorbert.posterous.com/nostalgic-music-evening http://evenorbert.posterous.com/nostalgic-music-evening

I'm not really the person who browse YouTube for hours for funny videos, but yesterday I started to remember to some of my favorite music. I just found some of my old diary from many years ago. It's from the time when I discovered Buffy on TV, the show which lead me to more TV shows.

Here's some of the clips in no particular order:

Michelle Branch: Goodbye to You
I think this is the music when Willow and Tara broke up in season 6 (episode "Tabula Rasa")

Sarah McLachlan: Full of Grace
End of season 2 and Buffy's world has changed forever... If you didn't cry through this scene, then you're probably the terminator itself.

Bush: Out of this World
Oh the dark season 6, Buffy is alone, seperated from the world and only Spike...

Gavin Rossdale: Can't Stop the World
Now this is the odd one. This is the title music of the TV show called Drive created by Tim Minear. It was on FOX...for four episodes (than they show 2 more on the internet I think). Paired with the unique opening title it was memorable to me.

Fri, 08 Apr 2011 11:23:00 -0700 Esmée Denters, a dutch gem from YouTube http://evenorbert.posterous.com/esmee-denters-a-dutch-gem-from-youtube http://evenorbert.posterous.com/esmee-denters-a-dutch-gem-from-youtube

In the last few years almost in every year there were one or two talent programs for the Hungarian people to show what they can do on a stage. Everybody sign up even the ones who can't sing or dance, just to have their 15 minutes of fame.

In today's world you have the technology to show yourself. Although American Idol remains the top show in the US, the Internet provides a unique opportunity for talents.

That's how Esmée Denters' story started. She's a dutch girl. A few years ago she started to upload videos to YouTube. She covered famous singers', like Justin Timberlake and Natasha Bedingfield. Soon she has milions of viewers on her channel and professional agents started to call Esmée. Finally she met one of her idol Justin Timberlake, who later signed her for his record company.

Since then Esmée had produced a couple of singles and a full album (Outta Here). She was a raw talent and improved greatly since her YouTube days. She also writes songs, many of her songs on her first album has co-written by Esmée.

Sun, 03 Apr 2011 10:03:00 -0700 My movie reviews: My Dinner with Andre http://evenorbert.posterous.com/my-movie-reviews-my-dinner-with-andre http://evenorbert.posterous.com/my-movie-reviews-my-dinner-with-andre

Last week was the first time I heard about this film in the TV show, Community. That episode pays homage to "My Dinner with Andre". It made me curious. This movie is about two hours long and entirely plays in a restaurant. Just two friends sitting, talking and eating. Pretty simply and probably boring, isn't?

In 1981, Andre and Wally are two friends haven’t seen each other for a long time, especially since Andre abandoned theater work in the last 5 years. Wally (William Shawn) is a play writer and actor. Andre (Andre Gregory) is a theater director. A mutual friend suggested Wally to meet with Andre. Wally knew about some changes in Andre’s life (trip to Tibet, etc), but he didn’t know what to think really and he prepared to suffer through the dinner.

If you usually don't like slow paced films, that this is not for you either. But if you are interested in some theories about life, death and the state of humanity, then I highly recommend it to you. It maybe strange at first, because Andre talks a lot, and mostly about weird theater experiences in Poland, but after that he opens up about his mother's death and you start to understand him more and more.

What is also good that although they are friends and colleges they have different opinions about these things, and while Andre talks most of the time Wally answers toward the end of the film, but couldn’t really challenge him. Andre is this New Agey guy (definitely from Wally's perspective), who realizes there is more to life than just go to work every day, paying the bills, etc. Wally more like an everyday man, who only wants to write plays, be with his family.

I really wanted to share one of the stories here, but Andre's experiences are very strong memories and I'm not a good storyteller myself. Let's just say there are things about unusual theater experiments in Poland with 40 men and 40 women who don't know the English langauge. Or the two gentlemen opinion about theater plays and our reality - easily translatable to movies - how violent is our world, but nobody sense this, because that's is what we get through the TV and news. Let's just say some stories are a little spookie, other worldly I must say. One of them was so true to our age (remember the film plays in 1981!), I had to find my jaw after it.

This is my favorite part of the movie. Only watch it if you want to spoil it for yourself!

Although the two chacters name's are identical to their real names, they aren’t playing themselves. Both of them said they would switch parts if they want to create a new version of the film. The problem with this as I see it, that Wallace Shawn has this high-pitched voice and a weird laugh (haha, hehe - search for The Princes Bride on YouTube and you'll see), and doesn't really suit Andre's character. Andre Gregory is really awesome in this movie and he has a very pleasant voice which makes the whole movie more enjoyable, since he speaks 80% of the time.

Music is nonexistent, but the background noises give a good sense about the crowded restaurant, so much that we forget, it’s not an actual restaurant, but just a studio. I quite liked the directing. Many times we saw just one face, but when Wally talks and the camera pulls back, we saw Andre’s face in the mirror behind their table, so we can see his reaction.

I have to say this film is one of the strangest I've ever seen. Two people sitting in a restaurant and talking shouldn’t be exciting, but the two actors excels to keep up our attention through out the two hours. The topics are thought provoking and the conversation will be with you at least for a week. I highly recommend to watch it with people who are open-minded and open to a little bit of a debate after the movie (and maybe prepare for a night long conversation).

After I watched "My Dinner with Andre", I wished I could jump in and continue the discussion with the two of them.
